CHAPTER TWELVE

“It’s family day!” Rashad raised Destiny high on Preah’s portico, the morning light blessing his niece like the angel she was.

“Family day!” Destiny giggled.

Preah snapped her fingers. “Rashad, pay attention.” She stood in the doorway with Destiny’s backpack. The sun shone overhead as the wind whistled through the hedges. They bordered Preah’s front and back yard in an angular ‘U’. As the wind swirled around her ceiling wind chimes, Preah continued. “So, I’ve packed Destiny’s snacks, spare clothes, and favorite toys inside this bag.” She held up a princess-themed backpack that didn’t fit the aesthetic of her outfit. Preah looked dolled up with well-done hair and makeup that enhanced her features. The woman was fully dressed apart from being barefoot. But other than that, her outfit was complete. It consisted of a matching blouse and skirt.

“I know. You don’t need to explain that. I’ve done this a million times.” Rashad put down Destiny and took the bag. The small girl held his leg, pointing at the rattling chimes above. “Yes, Destiny. They sound pretty, don’t they?”

Preah smiled at her child then squatted. “Promise to be good with Uncle Rashad today?” She opened her arms.

“Yes!” Destiny skipped into Preah’s embrace and planted a kiss on the woman’s cheek. In response, Preah kissed her forehead, saying many ‘I love you’s.

Preah stood again. “Make sure she has a good day so she forgets she’s missing Mommy and Daddy. I feel like we’re always sending her off with you.” She tittered, brushing her nails behind her head.

Rashad placed Destiny’s bag on his back. He held the child’s hand as she jumped like a rabbit. “That’s not true.” After thinking back, he changed his mind. “Don’t worry. I think introducing children to several guardians is good for them. She not only knows she can trust her parents but her Uncle Rashad too.” He’d seen this in a blog post. “Plus, you and Devonte are busy people. I get it. And if you two want to have a date night like now, it’s completely understandable. No one’s complaining. Not me or little Destiny over here.” He hopped with her a couple of times to make her laugh. It worked. She hugged his leg and giggled into his jeans. Nothing pleased Rashad more than seeing her happy. “We’re all having fun.”

Preah could sometimes be tough, but not even she could resist laughing. Rashad’s relationship with Destiny was too wholesome. He knew that for a fact. “You two are adorable.” Preah reached in and kissed Rashad’s cheek as well. “Now go. I wouldn’t want you missing story time at the library.” She waved.

“Oh right.” He checked his watch then spun around. “Later Pre. And tell Devonte his cologne is awesome. I can smell it from here!” Rashad ran down the short flight of stairs he’d taken to the portico. Destiny saw this as a race and ran past him. She would have gotten far if he didn’t have her hand.

His sister barked a long-winded laugh. “I will. Trust me.
